 | Gunman accosts man outside of his apartment |
A Columbus man had a gun put to his head Wednesday morning during an armed robbery, Columbus police said.
The 31-year-old man was talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone outside of his Cusseta Road apartment around 1:45 a.m. when he saw a man hiding behind a nearby car. The man then jumped from his hiding spot with a .38-caliber revolver, stating, "Give it up, fool," police said.
The man told the robber he had nothing before he was forced face down on the pavement. The robber felt his pockets, telling his victim that because he didn't have any money, he didn't need to continue talking to his girlfriend.

 | Man shot in buttock during argument |
Lanett, Ala., police are looking for a local man who shot another man in the buttock early Sunday.
Police Lt. Johnny Wood said Derrick Arvello Gibson, aka "DG," is accused of shooting another Lanett man, Milton McCants, twice in his left buttock.
Both men were visiting a mutual acquaintance at a house on 12th Avenue around 1:45 a.m., when they started arguing, Wood said. Why McCants and Gibson were fighting has not been determined, he said.

 | Man says he was beaten, robbed of boots, jewelry |
A man was beaten and robbed of his boots and other items during an attack in downtown Columbus early Saturday.
Christopher Martin, 24, told police that he was walking to his vehicle in the parking lot at the northeast corner of 13th Street and Broadway around 2:45 a.m. when he was approached from behind by three men.
In a report, police said one of the men punched Martin in the face, while another pushed him to the ground, put his foot on his back and told him to stay down or he would shoot. Martin told police that he did not see a gun.

 | Columbus Police officer shoots man twice after chase |
A man who police said fled from officers Tuesday night was shot twice by a patrolman when he refused to obey his commands.
Timothy Pugh, 30, of 1410 Talbotton Road was shot in the arm and the shoulder by Columbus Police Officer Michael Doolittle just after 10 p.m. behind a Sheffield Drive apartment complex, Police Chief Ricky Boren said. The shooting came after Pugh jumped from his moving Ford Crown Victoria and ran from police following a brief car chase down Macon and Forrest roads.
Pugh was in stable condition at The Medical Center. Doolittle, who has been with the department for seven months, is on administrative leave with pay.

 | Columbus Police hand out Medal of Valor |
The Columbus Police Department had never before awarded a Medal of Valor to one of its own.
That changed Wednesday, when those crowding a room at the Columbus Public Safety Center rose to their feet in honor of Cpl. Michael Dahnke, who received the honor at the annual employee recognition ceremony.
Dahnke, an eight-year veteran of the police department, was the second officer to reach Doctors Hospital on March 27 when he shot suspect Charles Johnston in the shoulder. Johnston, 63, is accused in the slayings of three men that day.

 | Man, 73, dies in accidental fire at gas station |
A Columbus man was found dead Tuesday morning, accidentally burned to death outside of a local business.
Jimmy Lee Gates, 73, of 3116 Wise St., was pronounced dead by Coroner Bill Thrower at 10:57 a.m. Gates was at 2306 Buena Vista Road, a gas station at the corner of Buena Vista Road and Ewart Avenue.
"There was fire involved," Thrower said. "He'll be going up (to Atlanta) for an autopsy."

 | Man charged with DUI after getting robbed |
A man went from getting robbed early Saturday to getting into a car wreck and then to getting arrested, Columbus police said.
Brian Crotty, 41, was walking to his motel room along Victory Drive at 12:12 a.m. when five men approached him, Lt. Charles Kennedy said.
"One of them said, 'Give me the money,' " the lieutenant added.

 | Police identify shooting victim |
Valley, Ala., police have identified a man who was shot and killed early Monday morning.
Yokbricus Monte Taylor, 22, was pronounced dead at Lanier Hospital in Valley after being shot in the chest.
Taylor was fatally shot during a encounter that occurred at a home on 29th Boulevard in Valley around 4 a.m. Monday. The homeowner, Eric Nelson, told police that upon arriving at the house after work, he was confronted by two men.

 | Police search for suspect in gas station robbery |
Police are looking for a man accused of robbing a Columbus gas station at gunpoint Saturday afternoon.
Columbus Police Sgt. Matt Blackstock said a masked man entered the Circle K on Milgen Road around 3:30 p.m. armed with a handgun.
He took an undisclosed amount of money from the store and fled on foot. Blackstock said he may have gotten into a silver or blue vehicle.

 | Man found dead in apartment complex's pool |
A Phenix City man was found dead in the swimming pool at his apartment complex on Tuesday night.
Kentrell Verdell Bowens, 26, was found at the bottom of the pool at Carriage Hills Apartments on Lakewood Drive around 8:40 p.m., police said.
Phenix City Police Capt. Frank Ivey said CPR was performed and Bowens was transported to Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City. He was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m. His body was sent to the forensics lab in Montgomery for an autopsy.
